Nanjing University Science and Technology Innovation Conference convenes

On May 21, Nanjing University Science and Technology Innovation Conference was held on Xianlin Campus. Zhao Yan, Vice Governor of Jiangsu Province, Chen Zhichang, Mayor of Nanjing City, and Tan Tieniu, Chair of NJU CPC Council and Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (the CAS) attended the conference and delivered speeches. Other attendees included Academicians of the CAS, Fang Cheng, Xing Dingyu, Zhu Shining, Lyu Jian, Shen Shuzhong, Guo Zijian, Ma Yuqiang, and Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Ren Hongqiang.

In his speech, Tan Tieniu emphasized that technological innovation is both a beacon for the future and a cornerstone of national rejuvenation. NJU has a long tradition of scientific excellence and serving the nation through technology. In recent years, the university has continued to strive for technological independence and self-reliance, and has achieved the "Nanjing University speed" in the competition of technological innovation. It has demonstrated the "Nanjing University strength" in serving the nation and Jiangsu, and marked the "Nanjing University coordinates" on the global technology map.

Tan Tieniu proposed specific measures for the better implement President Xi Jinping's important discussions on technological self-reliance and the spirit of his important letter to NJU's young scholars returning from abroad, to continue advancing the university's technological innovation work, and to better serve the nation's high-level technological self-reliance. It is NJU's mission to contribute to the construction of a strong technological nation and a strong technological province. The academicians and academic leaders are outstanding representatives of NJU's technological innovation work. He hopes that they could continue to shoulder responsibilities, carry out major tasks, guides young talent, thus making new contributions to NJU's technological innovation development and the nation's technological self-reliance. He also hopes that teachers and students will consciously integrate their academic pursuits into the great cause of building a strong technological nation and province, pursue excellence, and create achievements worthy of the times and the people.

At the conference, Tan Tieniu presented the "Nanjing University Outstanding Scientific and Technological Achievement Award" to the award-winning researchers. This is the first year that NJU has given this award, which includes the "Frontier Scientific Breakthrough Award," "Major Platform Construction Award," "Industrial Technological Innovation Award," and "International Scientific Cooperation Award".

Zheng Hairong, Vice President of NJU and Academician of the CAS, delivered a report titled "Striving for High-Level Technological Self-Reliance." He provided an in-depth analysis of current global technological frontier trends and paradigm innovations, and summarized the significant achievements and resource integration that NJU has made in the field of technological innovation in recent years. He pointed out that in the new era, NJU aims to significantly enhance its ability to serve major national needs, driven by deepening reform and innovation in systems and mechanisms, and using the "789 Science and Technology Research Plan" as a key initiative. It will continue to strengthen organized research, forming an innovation loop of "strategy-platform-mechanism-talent-achievement," achieving a full-chain of "basic research-technology innovation-achievement transformation," and striving for new achievements in promoting technological self-reliance.

The conference announced the "Nanjing University 789 Science and Technology Research Program." This program focuses on the "15th Five-Year Plan," targeting the world's technological frontiers, the main economic areas, major national needs, and people's health, forming "7 world scientific frontier issues, 8 major technological tasks, and 9 major innovative technology transformation clusters." The plan aims to comprehensively enhance NJU's technological innovation efficiency, continuously deepen reforms in the scientific and technological innovation system and mechanism, strengthen organized research capabilities, concentrate on the research of a number of world scientific frontier issues, undertake a number of major technological tackling tasks, and build a number of major innovative technology transformation clusters, so as to effectively serve national development needs, contribute to high-level technological self-reliance, and accelerate the realization of the overall goal of building a world-class NJU with Chinese characteristics.

Academician Shen Shuzhong from the School of Earth Sciences and Engineering, Academician Ren Hongqiang from the School of Environment, Professor Zhang Zhibing from the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, and Professor Du Lingjie from the School of Physics spoke as representatives of award recipients.

The conference was chaired by Lu Yanqing, Vice President of Nanjing University. Leaders from relevant departments of Jiangsu Provincial People's government and Nanjing Municipal People's government, as well as representatives from NJU departments, schools and major research platforms attended the conference.
