On June 12, Nanjing University holds a symposium on advancing high-quality development of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences (HASS) on Xianlin campus. Tan Tieniu, Chair of NJU CPC Council and Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences presided over the symposium and delivered a speech.
Over 20 representatives from various departments, including Yang Zhong, former Executive Deputy Chair of NJU CPC Council and Professor at NJU Business School, Zhou Xiaohong, NJU University Distinguished Professor in Humanities and Social Sciences and Professor at the School of Social Sciences, and Hua Tao, Chief Expert at the Research Base for Fostering a Strong Sense of Community for the Chinese Nation and Professor at the School of History, attended the symposium to contribute ideas and strategies for advancing the development of HASS at Nanjing University.

Tan Tieniu pointed out that the inspiring speeches of the faculty members reflected an international perspective and a commitment to innovation while maintaining core values. This boosted confidence and determination to consolidate and enhance the advantages of HASS at NJU. These valuable suggestions and forward-looking thoughts will be incorporated into the upcoming Party Congress report and NJU's next stage of development planning.
"The development of humanities is not less important but more so, as we face many urgent theoretical and practical challenges," Tan Tieniu stated. The unprecedented changes in a century and the strategy for the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation have posed new demands on the development of philosophy and social sciences. The new wave of technological and industrial revolutions has presented new challenges to the construction of "new humanities". Tan Tieniu emphasized the profound significance of vigorously developing HASS, accurately grasping the new situations and tasks faced by the development of these disciplines at NJU, and striving to create new prospects for their development. He put forward specific expectations and requirements for the work of HASS at Nanjing University. He hopes all faculty members will always remember General Secretary Xi Jinping's earnest instructions, closely integrate academic ideals with the fate of the nation, and strive to make NJU's HASS a major academic center, a hub of innovative achievements, and a demonstration for building an independent knowledge system with Chinese characteristics in philosophy and social sciences, thus leading the way in building a strong education and cultural nation, and writing a new chapter in the construction of the "Unique Nanjing University."

Chen Yunsong, Deputy Chair of NJU CPC Council, stated that NJU attaches great importance to the development of HASS, insists on open education, continuously increases the allocation of resources for HASS education, strengthens the cultivation and introduction of HASS talents, encourages interdisciplinary research in HASS, actively explores international exchanges and cooperation, and expects all HASS scholars to set an example in strengthening cultural confidence and telling China's story well, making new contributions to building a discipline system, academic system, and discourse system with Chinese characteristics.
Gao Fang, Director of the Office of Humanities and Social Sciences, reviewed the new progress and breakthroughs achieved over the past three years since the implementation of the "Nanjing University New Era Philosophy and Social Sciences Action Plan (2022-2025)" and shared important focal points for future HASS development.
Representatives from different Schools and Departments shared their experiences and thoughts, offering suggestions from various aspects.
Relevant leaders and representatives from NJU General Office, NJU Office of Publicity, and the Office of Humanities and Social Sciences attended the meeting.
