Donation Ceremony for Academician Chen Yong's precious documents holds on Xianlin campus

On May 20, 2025, Nanjing University held a ceremony on Xianlin Campus Library for Academician Chen Yong's donation of precious documents. Tan Zheming, President of Nanjing University and Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), and Chen Yong, Professor at the School of Earth Sciences and Engineering and Academician of the CAS attended the event.

Tan Zheming and Chen Yong jointly unveiled the donated precious documents. The Nanjing University Library will provide professional preservation, digital construction, open access, and special exhibitions for these documents, responding to the donation with respect and scientific management.

Tan Zheming presented a donation certificate to Chen Yong and expressed heartfelt gratitude for his generous contribution.

Vice President Suo Wenbin extended the highest respect and sincerest thanks to Academician Chen Yong. He noted that Chen's research achievements have not only significantly advanced the field of Earth sciences but also provided solid theoretical support for practical applications in disaster prevention and mitigation, energy development, and environmental protection, making an irreplaceable contribution to scientific progress and national development. Chen's patriotic dedication to returning from overseas to engage in scientific research sets a shining example for young students. Suo Wenbin emphasized that the precious documents showcase the exploration and reflection of the older generation of scientists on scientific endeavors. He hopes that NJU library will cherish these precious documents, ensuring their proper preservation, protection, organization, and research, allowing faculty and students to engage closely with them and appreciate the passion for science and the charisma of these "great teachers." He encourages faculty and students to emulate Academician Chen, contributing to technological progress, university development, and national prosperity.

Chen Yong is a distinguished geophysicist in China, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and an academician of the Third World Academy of Sciences. He has consistently adhered to the belief of "writing papers on the land of the motherland and applying scientific and technological achievements to the great cause of modernization." He has made outstanding achievements in seismology, experimental rock physics, and research on rock physics under high temperature and pressure. The documents donated this time include pioneering research manuscripts in cutting-edge fields such as seismic wave propagation characteristics and rock deformation mechanisms. These are treasures of academic research and precious assets of cultural heritage.

Following the donation ceremony, an academic sharing session by Academician Chen Yong was held on-site. With the theme "Landlord and Tenant: The Earth and Us," Chen Yong shared insights from his research field on academic research and scientific methods with faculty and students, encouraging them to explore the unknown, challenge frontier issues, and continuously advance disciplinary development.

The ceremony and sharing session were respectively hosted by Huang Xianjin, Director of the Library, and Wang Rucheng, Professor at the School of Earth Sciences and Engineering. The event was attended by Feng Fan, Director of the Alumni Affairs Office, Dong Ting, Party Secretary of the School of Sciences and Engineering, and representatives of faculty and students.
